Huge savings on room rates, more space on the beach and warm tropical temperatures: There are many reasons why the off-season might be the best time to visit Cancun. Below, we share why we encourage travelers to resist the temptation to fly south in the winter and head down in the summer or fall instead.

Prices are much, much lower

How this has remained a secret so long, we're not sure. But we're ready to spill the beans: The off-season, which starts in the summer months and lasts through November, is the cheapest time to go to Cancun. If it's savings you want, save your trip for the period after the Fourth of July and before Christmas.

Take the Crown Paradise Club Cancun, for example, an all-inclusive resort in the Hotel Zone. Rates for September and October stays drop as low as $240 per night here, but in January, they shoot up to $360 per night. And it's not uncommon to see some ultra-luxury resorts get as high as $500 per night during the high season.

Worried about the weather? As the summer and fall months are Cancun's hurricane season, there is some risk of having some rainy weather during your stay. But more often than not, the days are sunny and dry and perfect for beach activities.

Cancun Off Season

Beaches are less crowded

Since North Americans tend to spend their summers at the lake or camping, you're less likely to find them sunning themselves on Mexico's most famous white-sand beaches. Save your trip for the off-season and you'll rub elbows with a lot fewer travelers. And since resorts aren't usually packed to the brim during this time, your hotel stay will likely be a quiet one.

There are more options for accommodations

Ever searched for resorts for January and February travel dates and found them all booked up? In the off-season, those same rooms (even at upscale hotels) are suddenly available, and at much better prices to boot. Decreased competition means a better selection of rooms, not just in Cancun, but in nearby resort towns like Playa del Carmen and Tulum in the Riviera Maya.

Cancun Off Season

There's an abundance of travel deals

During summer and fall, resorts in Cancun advertise rooms for as much as 50% less than they would cost in the winter months. Since airfares also tend to decrease a bit for fall travel, Cancun vacation packages are offered at jaw-dropping prices that you'd never encounter in the high season — in fact, we've seen packages with starting rates as low as $500. With so many deals and so much availability, it's the one time of year when it might actually pay to wait to book your vacation until the last minute.

These Florida Towns Will Remind You of the Caribbean

For most, a beach vacation on a Caribbean island is a no-brainer. There's nothing quite as strong as the allure of palm trees, aquamarine water and colorful architecture — not to mention a more relaxed pace of life. But before you commit to a destination in the West Indies (and the long trek that invariably comes with it), consider these easy-to-reach Florida escapes with a host of Caribbean-inspired characteristics, from gin-clear waters to brightly colored façades.
