Good news for beach lovers who want to explore a lesser-known slice of the Bahamas: A new flight service has launched between Miami International Airport and Bimini, a collection of tiny islands some 50 miles from the U.S. mainland.
Bahamasair, which already operates a daily route between Miami and Nassau, is offering the service four times each week (on Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays and Mondays) flying into South Bimini Airport. Served by a 50-seat ATR-42 aircraft, it is the only route to Bimini from the Miami Airport.
"We are thrilled by Bahamasair's decision to expand its service at MIA and offer our passengers yet another destination to choose from when they travel between Miami and the Bahamas," said Miami-Dade Aviation Director Lester Sola. "The Bahamas continues to be one of our busiest markets in the Caribbean, and we look forward to seeing travel increase with these four new weekly flights."

So why might a vacationer choose Bimini over more popular Bahamas destinations like Nassau and Freeport?
Besides a plethora of water-based activities and attractions, this under-the-radar escape offers distinctive fare, beautiful beaches to explore, and relaxed hotels to cozy up in, according to Fodor's.
North Bimini is home to Bailey Town and Alice Town, spanning only a few block each. In Alice Town, be sure to walk by the Dolphin House, a mini-museum embellished with conch shells, stones and sea glass.
Stop at rustic Island House Bar & Grill for a cocktail and then head up to Stuart Conch Salad Stand near Bailey Town for fresh seafood and cold beers.
Stay at Resorts World Bimini, a luxury property comprising 750 acres where you'll find multiple infinity pools and 10 restaurants, cafes and bars. The resort boasts the largest marina complex in the Bahamas, not to mention a 10,000-square-foot ocean-view casino. Rates start at $277 per night for summer stays.
Another polished option is 4-star Bimini Big Game Club Resort & Marina, located a short walk from Alice Town. It offers a marina, a dive shop, a swimming pool with a poolside bar and waterfront dining. Rates start at $251 per night for summer travel.
