If you were asked to pick your favorite beach, what would you say? According to Americans recently polled by recreational information hub Tipspoke, the answer is clear: Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
For anyone who has experienced Myrtle Beach's miles of beaches, family-friendly attractions and affordable accommodations, that should come as no surprise.
But "best beach" surveys are common on the internet, with criteria often unclear. What makes this one different?
For starters, the survey was not limited to any specific readership (i.e., travel website subscribers), and the one thousand people polled were not given a predetermined list to choose from – rather, they were given an open question format and filled in their preferred beach themselves.
Here's the full list:
1. Myrtle Beach, S.C.
2. Miami Beach, Fla.
3. Clearwater Beach, Fla. and Destin Beach, Fla. (Two-way tie for third)
5. Daytona Beach, Fla.
6. Siesta Key, Fla.
7. Cocoa Beach, Fla.
8. Venice Beach, Calif.
9. Huntington Beach, Calif.
10. Four-way tie for 10th place: Jones Beach, N.Y.; Malibu Beach, Calif.; Newport Beach, Calif.; and Panama City Beach, Fla.
And a few runner-ups are as follows: La Jolla, Calif.; Pismo Beach, Calif.; Long Beach, Calif.; Ocean City, N.J.; Outer Banks, N.C.; and Virginia Beach, Va.
"The Carolinas made an impressive showing with Myrtle Beach coming in first and Outer Banks making the extended list," said Tipspoke master researcher Stacey Sao, who describes herself as a beach fanatic.
"Florida and California made the strongest overall showings, dominating the top ten."
"I've learned a great deal about these U.S. beaches from both this this survey and meta-analysis, and am excited to be able to add these venues to my personal ‘must-visit' list," said Sao.
