Just this month, FRS Caribbean has started offering direct ferry service from the Magic City to Freeport, Grand Bahama Island three days per week — Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. (On Saturdays, the ferry first anchors in Bimini before arriving to Freeport.)

Guests sail on the 400-passenger HSC San Gwann, a 170-foot high-speed catamaran. The vessel features a cafeteria with a bar and a breakfast area offering baked goods and sandwiches. Cigars, cigarettes and spirits can be purchased duty-free. Upgrade from economy to business class to get perks such as a light breakfast or snacks, Priority Disembark privileges and 10% off in the duty-free shop.

Fares for the Miami to Freeport route start at $110 one-way or $129 roundtrip. Since the company offers same-day 6 p.m. sailings back to Miami, you can easily make it a whirlwind day trip packed with visits to attractions such as the Garden of the Groves, the Port Lucaya Marina, the Rand Nature Center or beaches such as Taino Beach or Lucaya Beach.

Interested in staying overnight, or extending your trip even longer? Snag low seasonal rates at the all-inclusive Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach, boasting three restaurants, a freshwater pool and direct access to Churchill Beach. Rates start at $192 per night for two guests.

Alternatively, you can opt for the upscale condo experience at Island Seas Resort, offering fully equipped kitchens, ocean- or marina-view balconies, an on-site spa and a freeform pool.

There's nothing quite as strong as the allure of palm trees, aquamarine water and colorful architecture — not to mention a more relaxed pace of life. But before you commit to a destination in the West Indies (and the long trek that invariably comes with it), consider these easy-to-reach Florida escapes with a host of Caribbean-inspired characteristics, from gin-clear waters to brightly colored façades.
