Public Piece of Luxury

As if Monaco needed yet another shiny jewel to bring tourists from around the world, beautiful Larvotto Beach adds to the small city-state’s long list of coveted attractions.

The beachfront comprises two small coves and is backed by Avenue Princess Grace, lined with luxury high-rises. And luckily, it remains public for all to enjoy — even those without a high net worth.

Beach Activities

Thanks to clear Mediterranean waters, it’s not hard to view underwater life, and because waves are rarely choppy, swimming and wading are a pleasure for beachgoers of all ages.

A jellyfish net ensures swimmers don’t get stung, and lifeguards keep vigilant in the busy summer months. If the pebbled sand gets to be uncomfortable, rent a chair and umbrella from one of the on-site private beach clubs.

There are concessions toward the back of the beach, as well as volleyball nets and a small children’s playground. For splendid views of the city, the mountains and the ocean, walk to the end of one of three concrete piers, or head to the lush Promenade du Larvotto, just above the beachfront stretch, where you’ll find benches and a lovely fountain.

Monaco’s small size makes it a breeze to explore. Be sure to stop by the monument to Princess Grace, honoring the American actress who married Prince Rainier III in 1956. Near the monument is the New National Museum of Monaco, housed in historic Belle Epoque villas. And just south of the beach are the stunning Japanese Gardens, complete with a tranquil pond and a teahouse.
