Beach Vibes in the Big City

With all the buzz surrounding Barcelona’s culinary, architectural and cultural offerings, travelers often don’t realize the city occupies a prime oceanfront spot along the Mediterranean Sea, where the water is a distinctive blue-green hue and the sun shines year-round.

Yes, indeed — Barcelona is a bona fide beach destination, and one whose world-class attractions help it compete against other Mediterranean hot spots in Spain and France.

Sunny Days, Lively Nights

Though there are several distinct beach areas along the Catalan capital’s eastern coast, the most popular is Barceloneta Beach, bordering the lively neighborhood of the same name.

It’s the best place for a city break any time of year, though travelers will see more action in the busy summer months. Don’t expect crowds to dissipate come nightfall. That’s when nightlife and late-night Spanish dinners commence.

To See and Do

A palm-tree-lined promenade runs along the golden-sand oceanfront stretch, which is dotted with sunbathers, beach volleyball players, and groups of locals drinking mojitos from mobile vendors.

Restaurants near the promenade offer tapas specials on their ocean-view patios, and street performers entertain crowds of locals and tourists. As the sun sets, the iconic W Hotel, located at the beach’s southern curve, cuts an impressive fin-shaped figure.

First-timers should make a point to see the iconic “El Peix” fish-shaped landmark, as well as the “L’Estel Ferit” sculpture, also known as “The Cubes,” by German artist Rebecca Horn.

Don’t miss splendid Parc de la Ciutadella, not far from the beach, which features an ornate fountain, a lagoon with boat rentals and a zoo.
