Best Beaches in Santiago
1. Playa Caletones
A bit rough around the edges, Playa Caletones is a main attraction near the proud, rustic city of Gibara in the Holguin Province.
Though it experienced a devastating earthquake in 2008, this distinctive beach town has almost fully recovered, and the unblemished coast and superb snorkeling and diving spots still draw curious travelers.
With its fine, white sand and clear water, Playa Caletones is the Caribbean beach ideal without the crowds and bustling mega-resorts.
Getting HereSpeaking of the trek, getting here does take some effort. It's a bumpy 45-minute ride from Gibara, and when you come, come prepared.
There aren't many options here in terms of facilities and amenities, so bringing along snacks and equipment is advised.
If you'd rather wing it, there's a seafood restaurant, La Esperanza, that offers good food and a terrace with great views.
Naturally BeautifulTo cool off under the hot sun, head to one of the area's cenotes, or put on your snorkel gear and head out in search of some aquatic life close to the shore.
As long as you're in this remote paradise, book a diving excursion to the area's cave network, which includes a world-famous dive site, Los Tanques Azules, to admire the mysterious underwater formations there.
